Honda Brio

Honda Brio

Honda's latest attempt at making a small car for India seems to be even more "enthusiastic" compared to its last 'jazzy' entry. We get behind the wheel of this spirited little hatchback to find out whether the Brio hits the right spot

The outside story

The Brio certainly is a looker. In this segment where classical designs are more appreciated than anything radical, the Brio has everything working in its favour. While it doesn’t have the sharp, funky lines of its rival, the Chevrolet Beat, or the radical futuristic styling of its elder sibling, the Jazz, it still manages to stand out in a crowd quite easily. The well proportioned stance with short overhangs is something that really gives the car a dynamic look. While Honda’s designers might want to describe the styling as 'double triangle' or the like in the language only automobile designers can speak and very few apart from their ilk can understand, what is clear to understand is that the Brio does look like it’s moving forward at a good clip even when its standing still, especially when viewed bang-on from the side.

Let’s get one thing out of the way – Honda makes great cars. There’s absolutely no doubt about that. But of course, it’s not so difficult to make good cars, even great ones, which start at double-digit lakh prices. Bring that figure down to half that, and you’ll see that it’s not such an easy task. Not that auto makers in India fail at this task, but just that the competition this down the order is far more cut throat and to stand out against the established competition is a fairly monumental task. Honda managed to burn, or let’s say slightly singe its fingers with the Jazz – a car which proved that you can have one of the best products in this hotly contested segment, and yet fail to make waves if the pricing is not right.

Honda did correct this factor eventually, with a significantly revised pricing for this wonderfully equipped and rather generously sized hatch, and boy did that do wonders for its sales. So with that lesson firmly in mind, Honda wasn’t about to put out a repeat performance when coming up with an entry level hatchback which would go head to head against established hot sellers such as the Hyundai i10 and the lot. Now Honda does have a lot riding on this little car, given the fact that the entry and mid-order hatchback segments account for most to the top selling cars in India. Also given the fact that Honda has a fairly small product portfolio in India, it becomes even more critical to get each car right. But as we’ve said before, Honda never gets its products wrong, and this fact couldn’t be better iterated after you take a look at the new Brio.

This is accentuated by the slashed crease just below the shoulder line and a parallel crease near the bottom of the car. Then there is there is a wide stance with its flared wheel arches, reminiscent of more sporty cars which really improves the appeal by leaps and bounds. This wider track combined with the car's relatively short wheelbase of 2,345mm as well as the lack of overhangs at either end, and the Brio comes across as a little rally car that would be more at home spewing dust on special stages rather than pootling about town. The front of the car bears the typical Honda traits that we’ve come to accept now, such as the large ‘H’ badge on the grille.

Then there is the rear of the car. Now most people, especially after looking at the pictures, might say that the all-glass tailgate with the small, sharp clear glass taillights, looks strange. One might even be forgiven for thinking this, as pictures really don’t do it justice. But one look at that rump in the flesh is enough to convince you of how wrong you were. The thick black accents on the glass tail-gate combined with the round lights inside the clear-glass taillight cluster give it the look of a cartoon character from traditional Japanese anime. It makes the car look especially cute and endearing when looked at from the rear angle, and it is probably the most instantly recognisable backside on any Indian hatchback at the moment.

Honda Accord Car

Honda Accord Cars

Editor's View : Honda Accord

One of India's most loved large saloons, the Honda Accord is a great car that also offers loads of value for money. Recent makeover has ensured that the Accord remains as space-age on the outside as it is on the inside. Comfortable interiors, lots of space and typically Honda reliability have made this another runaway success for the Japanese manufacturer. Oh, and it also comes with a very powerful and efficient 3.6 liter V6 petrol mill too - great performance guaranteed!

Upside : Its a Honda, reliability, performance, style, interiors, equipment levels, price
Downside : Ground clearance can be an issue
Our Verdict : The Accord is a winner. There is really nothing that can be said against this car. Its got..

Mahindra Renault Logan Car News
Renault could bring a new sedan based on Logan

Remember, the now polpular Mahindra Verito was once upon a time linked with Renault. Not with Verito though, but we used to call it Mahindra Renault Logan back then. Looks like Renault is determined to revive its lost grip in the entry-level sedan segment with a brand new car with Renault underpinning. The helping hand for Renault to make this project a success are the designers to ZR.ru who gave a new look to the estranged Renault Logan to emerge with dazzling new looks. However, there are absolutely no details on the pricing or the engine specifications of the sedan, but the car manufacturer could look at Maruti Swift Dzire for an idea.

Mahindra Logan CNG Version Launched
Mahindra & Mahindra has finally launched the much awaited CNG version of its famous Logan in Indian Auto market. The availability of CNG Kit is made on 1.4 GLE and GLX trim levels. This launch is yet limited to Delhi and Mumbai only but soon company will spread the launch all over the country.

Sales of Logan steam up in Europe
Mahindra Logan is one of the most successful models of the company although the product’s image is a little skeptic in the auto market of India. The model is sold as Renault Dacia in Europe. Recently, the product reached a significant milestone when the production facility of Romania introduced the one-millionth unit. This exceptional unit was white coloured and was an entry level product equipped with a 1.2L petrol engine. The engine produces 72bhp. Later on, Renault Dacia registered even more raised sales in the local market. As far as the European markets are concerned, the model is doing well. Recently Dacia made an announcement that in terms of sales, Logan stands at the 6th place in Russia.

Mahindra XUV 500 Review

Overall

Indian carmaker Mahindra seems to have decided to put the country on global scenario with its global design based new SUV - Mahindra XUV 500. With this car in, Mahindra’s SUV offering touches the famous five figure.

The US $12.5 billion Mahindra Group has a fleet of SUVs in India and it has given some of the sturdiest and performance driven cars in India. Prominent among it was iconic Mahindra Jeep that had ruled Indian rural roads for decades. Later, Mahindra SUVs became more comfortable and powerful as well.

The recent addition, Mahindra XUV 500 is an all-new avatar by Mahindra and it takes global design signaling across the globe presence expectation.
The XUV 500 by Mahindra is a global standard SUV that is going to embark the company on a world-wide platform. Originally codenamed Mahindra W201, the XUV 500 received its name recently before its launch on September 29.

Pronounced as Mahindra XUV 500 with the last to ‘00’ pronounced as alphabet ‘OO’, it symbolizes activeness and the agility besides the quickness it has as an SUV. Mahindra has arrived at the design of this SUV after an intensive research and survey that is said to have been conducted in various western markets besides India. Apart from this, the SUV also has been tested to be perfect on many destinations including Europe, Australia and South Africa. After launch in India, the Mahindra XUV 500 will be marketed in South Africa.

Besides the design, Mahindra XUV 500 features a unique exterior styling, an array of technologies that is nowhere visible in the SUVs already in place by Mahindra. In addition, the global design brings with it the global standards as well in this SUV. Mahindra’s Research Valley engineers have burnt their midnight oil to make this happen and it is with the help of their efforts that XUV 500 is able to be developed on global standards.

The aerodynamic monocoque design based SUV Mahindra XUV 500 is entirely different from the traditionally designed cars. Contrary to the conventional design in which the car is made of a frame and then it is covered with lightweight metal sheets, the XUV 500 body is a single piece body in which the body and chassis are one piece. The monocoque design of the XUV 500 is also known as single shell design.

It also has the first-ever transversely placed engine that has increased the passenger space inside and has also improved safety in case of an impact besides a larger crumple zone. Thus Mahindra XUV is much safer and crash resistant than any of the other Mahindra SUV offering. Land Rover LR2 Freelander and Volvo cars employ transversely placed engine in their cars. Such first in the class features make this SUV at par with global standards. Incorporating such features has made XUV 500 to compete with global SUVs in terms of global norms, safety regulations and emission standards. In India, XUV 500 will create its own unique space and is place above Mahindra Scorpio and the big SUV daddies in India.

Mahindra XUV 500 has 2179cc mHawk engine of Mahindra Scorpio inside that helps this SUV challenge any terrain globally. The Common Rail Diesel engine produces 140bhp which is enough to cruise the XUV 500 on road or off-road. Most noteworthy is the torque which is 330Nm that lets the new SUV to move around easily even in snail-paced city traffic. There is a six-speed manual gearbox in XUV 500 with a torque on demand mechanism. There are two variants as far as transmission is concerned – XUV 500 two-wheel drive model and XUV 500 four-wheel drive model. Micro-hybrid technology for better fuel efficiency is also in place in this new SUV.

Mileage, Average And Fuel Economy

Despite being loaded with 140bhp power, XUV 500 is still frugal. Mahindra XUV 500 Mileage is 12kmpl in the city and 14 kmpl on the highways. ARAI certified mileage on the highway is 15.1 kmpl. Fuel tank capacity of this new Mahindra SUV is 70 litres.
